Mathematics Trips

Queen Anne's Lower Sixth Mathematicians got a fresh perspective on maths at The Hexagon, Reading during the exciting 'Maths Inspiration Lecture' this week, where real-world applications came to life through expert speakers.

The event was hosted by Matt Parker, the “stand-up mathematician,” known for his TV and radio presenting and passion for making maths accessible and entertaining.

The first speaker, author Rob Eastaway, explored the differences between humans and AI in solving puzzles. He highlighted that ChatGPT can struggle with certain puzzles that humans often get wrong because people sometimes fail to trust their intuition.

Alison Kiddle, teacher and puzzlesmith, followed with a talk on statistics, discussing the likelihood of death in situations such as climbing Mount Everest or driving, as well as the odds of winning the lottery, illustrating how statistics inform our understanding of risk.

Finally, Mathew Scroggs, Senior Research Engineer at University College London, examined old-school video games and their maps in a 3D context. Using Pac-Man as an example, he demonstrated how the game’s 2D map would translate into a cylindrical 3D space.

The lecture provided an engaging experience, demonstrating the diverse ways maths intersects with everyday life and inspiring attendees to explore its practical applications.
