A Level Geography Fieldwork Trip: Building Skills Beyond the Classroom

Geography Trips

Our Geography students swapped the classroom for the great outdoors on an unforgettable fieldwork adventure along the Dorset coast and surrounding areas, designed to build their confidence and competence in fieldwork techniques ahead of their NEA.

Our first stop was Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove, where students carried out beach analysis. They practised a range of core methodologies, including sediment size and shape analysis, beach profiling, and data recording techniques. Alongside the academic work, there was a memorable moment spotting a seal just off the coast - an unexpected highlight that brought the landscape to life.

We then travelled to Studland Bay to investigate a sand dune ecosystem. Here, students explored succession, zonation, and the relationship between vegetation and environmental conditions. They applied sampling techniques such as quadrats and transects, gaining first-hand experience of how physical and human factors shape these fragile environments.

In Swanage, the focus shifted to human geography. Students analysed what gives Swanage its unique sense of place, exploring how different groups may experience and perceive the town in contrasting ways. They also assessed the health of the high street, using methods such as environmental quality assessments, pedestrian counts, and more creative approaches like smellscapes and soundscapes to capture the character and lived experience of the town.

On the final day, we stopped in the New Forest to explore carbon sequestration. Students measured vegetation and discussed the role of natural environments in climate regulation - alongside the slightly less scientific (but equally important) activity of hugging a few trees.

Overall, the trip was designed to expose students to a wide range of fieldwork techniques and methodologies, helping them to move beyond theory and develop the practical skills, independence, and critical thinking required for their NEA.
