Celebrating Language and Diversity

Queen Anne’s values the cultural and linguistic diversity of our community and warmly welcomes students for whom English is an additional language. We view multilingualism as a strength that enriches the school and supports learning across all subjects.

All pupils have equitable access to the curriculum, with English as the main language of instruction. In line with our Whole-School Language Policy, we provide targeted teaching and resources to develop academic English while recognising and valuing each student’s home language. Our aim is to ensure every learner achieves their full potential, at Queen Anne’s and beyond.

Subject Information and Needs Assessment

Upon arrival, each international student completes an initial placement assessment to determine her current level of English language proficiency, acknowledging that language skills evolve over time.

Progress is monitored continuously, drawing on insights from subject teachers, tutors, and house staff. This collaborative approach ensures that language development is supported across all areas of learning and that any adjustments to EAL provision are responsive to each student’s needs and progress.

Teaching and Learning

EAL teaching at Queen Anne’s is designed to develop students’ language competence, confidence, and academic literacy. Lessons are:

  • Focused on improving both communicative and academic language skills
  • Delivered in a supportive and inclusive environment that encourages risk-taking and values mistakes as part of the learning process
  • Closely connected to the wider curriculum, helping learners access and contribute fully to all subjects
  • Usually conducted in small groups to enable personalised support and active participation
  • Timetabled alongside mainstream subjects to complement, not replace, other areas of study
  • Designed to prepare students for recognised English language qualifications and future academic pathways
