"On Monday 23 February, U4 went on a trip to Bletchley Park. After a long bus ride there, the day started with a code‑breaking session, which immediately showed us how challenging the work must have been. We tried deciphering Morse code, and even when it was slowed down for us, we still couldn’t work it out! When it was played at full speed, we realised we would have been completely useless as wartime codebreakers, which made us appreciate the real workers even more!
After that, we explored several exhibitions, including Hut 11A, where the Bombe machine was displayed. Seeing how the machine worked to help crack Enigma codes was really interesting, and the Intelligence Factory exhibition was full of interactive activities that allowed us to test our knowledge and understand how information was processed during the war. We also visited Cottage 3, where Alan Turing lived which was fascinating.
After our lunch break, we visited the D‑Day exhibition and watched a video explaining how the intelligence at Bletchley Park contributed to its success. It was very interesting to see how the codebreaking work connected to real events and important decisions. We also had a guided tour where we learned even more about the people who worked there and saw the mansion, which looked impressive and very different from the busy huts. We learned that at the start of the Second World War, there were around 100 people working at Bletchley Park, mostly from Oxford and Cambridge Universities or women (as many of the men were fighting in the war). Surprisingly, by the end of the war, there were 8,995 people working there.
Before leaving, we explored the AI exhibition, which linked the computing work at Bletchley Park to modern technology. Overall, the trip offered a wide range of activites and gave us a much deeper understanding of both the history and the impact of the work carried out there."
