On Tuesday 12 November, the cast of “Twelfth Night” took to stage at The Old Town Hall, Wycombe Swan to perform alongside three other schools as part of The Shakespeare Schools Festival. Over 20,000 young people take part in this Festival on 118 professional stages across the country; it is a huge celebration of our country’s greatest playwright, and we were thrilled to be part of it.

The day began with a technical rehearsal, working with the theatre’s professional crew, followed by dress rehearsal. We then returned in the evening to present our play and to watch the other schools who performed; “Macbeth”, “Much Ado About Nothing” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”.

The girls were sensational on the night, the performance was funny, slick and joyful. For most of them it was their first-time performing Shakespeare, and their love for the play, working together and performing shone through.

At the end of the night all schools were given an appraisal by a Director from The Shakespeare Schools Foundation who said of our girls:

“The performances were on a par with professional actors.”

Flo C (L5) who played Sir Andrew Aguecheek said of the experience:

“Everybody there had taken the scripts that they were given and interpreted Shakespeare in so many different ways; with small details changing each performance. This made it so interesting to be a part of, and a great way to make Shakespeare fun and accessible for all of us!”

The girls also performed their rendition of “Twelfth Night” to the Queen Anne’s Community a week later on Tuesday 19 November. The audience thoroughly enjoyed our drama students’ renditions of a classic Shakespeare play:

“It was marvelous and professionally presented performance – very funny as well!”

The girls demystified what can sometimes be seen as a complicated play. They knew it inside out and were able to illuminate the plot in their own unique way.
