“This time last year we were showing you pictures of an empty library (empty of people, anyway!) and Librarian Mrs Norris was out and about delivering reserved books to the Houses. It is so good to have the library back to normal this term, with people browsing the bookshelves at lunchtime and we enjoyed welcoming the Upper Fours who paid us a class visit to research the Second World War.
Following the visit of Carol Ann Duffy, arranged by the English department, the most borrowed non-fiction book this term, is ‘The World’s Wife’ by Carol Ann Duffy. Our favourite fiction book is ‘One of us is next’ by Karen M. McManus and the most popular author of the term has been Robin Stevens and her ‘Murder most unladylike’ series has been flying off the shelves!
Although the Fours have borrowed the most books this term, Kimberly A from the Upper Sixth wins the individual borrower competition, and Mrs O’Connell Hughan is the record holder for the staff, making the most of her time when she supervises Prep in the Library.
To celebrate our return to near-normality and the new Charter system, we have introduced the Charter Reading Challenge this term. The Fours and Lower Fours are encouraged to take part through their library lessons, but we have also had entries from all the other year groups and staff. To assist in finding books to fit the categories, we are mounting relevant displays. So far, in November, we focused on books set in time of war, and this month we have books set in Victorian times.
This term the most merits have been won by Olufunmi E, who has completed more than half the challenge already and has read and reviewed 14 books for Austen. Very well done, Olufunmi!
Interim totals for the Charter Reading Challenge are:
Franklin 18 merits
Pankhurst 22 merits
Watson 23 merits
Curie 29 merits
Austen 54 merits”
