Chemistry Competition

"On Wednesday 15 January a team of four U5-U4 Chemists travelled to Oxford University to take part in the regional Top of the Bench Chemistry Competition

The challenge involved identifying the different drugs and chemicals in different urine samples, and calculating the concentrations of these chemicals. To do this we had to learn how to use a variety of complex A level techniques including using a UV lamp, thin layer chromatography and vacuum filtration.

We had to work together carefully as a team as time was tight and we were being judged on both our practical techniques and accuracy. It was an exciting day and great to be able to do this all in the huge Oxford Chemistry labs, the same ones used by the undergraduates.

Although we did not win the competition we got all the answers correct and identified the chemicals correctly (which was an amazing achievement in itself). Overall, the outing was a great experience!" - Mia and Charlotte (U4)
