How has Covid-19 affected the Law?

Sixth Form Blog L6

On the 18th June, L6 members from the Queen Anne's School Law and Medical societies were invited to a virtual discussion by Fionnuala McCredie Q.C. and Micheal Mylonas Q.C. on how Covid-19 has affected various aspects of the law.

We learnt about the legal issues being dealt with by lawyers during the pandemic, and we discussed various topics such as the lack of PPE and the distribution of ventilators in hospitals.

Both aspiring lawyers and medics found the discussion incredibly useful as it enabled us to gain a better understanding for the current issues that have arisen from Covid-19, and the lasting impacts that will be present in our society that we will begin our own careers in.

It is so important to remain knowledgeable on current affairs and to understand the issues that Covid-19 has caused, we are therefore grateful to have been involved in this invaluable discussion.

“I thought it was very interesting to learn about how barristers and judges are continuing to hold hearings remotely during lockdown, in a way that doesn’t compromise justice.” Ruth D

It was great to get an insight into different medical ethics linked to the pandemic, how coronavirus has affected the daily life of barristers and useful knowledge and understanding of the way law has changed to include in our personal statements” Aimee N

“I found it very interesting that the NHS may be more affected by the amount of missed appointments at hospitals due to COVID-19 such as cancer treatment and diagnosis in the long run as this will create such a backlog which will not be easy to manage in the future.” Jazz B

“I learnt about how hospitals responded to the virus and the complications this has for the legal system; specifically of particular interest to me was hearing about the ventilator demand and the uncertainty around what was lawful during this time of crisis. Such as when an individual was denied a ventilator and the repercussions this caused within the legal system.” Jas V

The Sixth Form team would like to say a huge "Thank you!" to both Fionnuala McCredie Q.C. and Micheal Mylonas Q.C. for giving up their time to share their expertise with us.
