The Battle of Queen Anne's Hall!

The U4s module on the First World War and trench life came to a climax last week, with some battle re-enactments in the School Hall!

The students were challenged to re-enact three key moments in the war to demonstrate the change in conditions and tactics.

First of all was the stalemate period between the two sides in the early years of the war where students examined the impact of defective shells.

Secondly, the Battle of the Somme where British troops shelled the Germans for around five days before attacking. Unfortunately many of the British troops (and the U4s!) were then cut down by German machine guns.

Lastly, the Battle of Passchendaele where the U4s learnt about the advantage of having higher ground in the war and by that point more reliable weapons.

Although tanks and gas were used from 1916 onwards, they made no appearance in the Battle of Queen Anne’s Hall!
