Sports Whole School

Although much of Lent Term was spent learning remotely from home this year, nothing could stop our fun and creative sports endeavors, both in and outside of lessons!

Our diligent PE Department found fun ways for the girls to enjoy their live PE lessons together, with activities such as the 'heads and tails workout', exercise during a virtual trip to the zoo, and even juggling, alongside the more traditional circuits and exercises.

Girls attempted a range of challenges outside of lessons, logging their km achieved on their PE One Notes or their QA Strava account. The challenges started with trying to summit Everest and ended with a year group challenge to try to accumulate as many km as possible via any method of physical activity to notionally get from Land’s End to John O’Groats. Our overall winners were the Upper Four, achieving over 900km as a year group - almost reaching Carlisle!

Miss Watterston put together an epic fitness training programme, which some of the girls have been working hard on, and many of the girls chose to use their extra time spent with family to exercise with their loved ones: Amy cycled regularly with her mum, and Rachel and Heidi took part in a charity dog walk with their family.

Head Girl Jas took on a Strava challenge to run 100km in a month, and ended up smashing her target by running 145km during February!

Jazz ran the Henley tow path and surrounding areas so many times she managed to capture it in all seasons! In between the photography session she also completed 28 miles for Pancreatic Cancer UK during February.

A number of our girls took part in the first virtual Berkshire Schools Virtual Cross Country competition.

Amelie placed 6th out of 71 entrants in the U13 age category.

Hannah placed 24th out of 114 in the U15 category with Holly placing 36th.

Molly placed 7th out of 18 in the U19 age category.

Mrs Burley was delighted and incredibly proud of the girls, who persevered with the complex route rules and did so well!

Our elite athletes have not been resting on their laurels either. Libby, now part of the British Tri Regional Academy as well as the Regional Pent GB Pathway Academy, completed 62 workouts in 14 different activity types during the month of February, including fencing, roller skiing, shooting, cycling and interval running!

Amelia competed in her first virtual International trampoline competition against competitors from 15 countries. She was entered into 3 events at the highest level. The most prominent was the Ladies Elite Open Competition attracting the best international competitors aged 16 upwards. This included Rosie MacLennan the current Olympic champion from Canada, who will be in Tokyo this year. Amelia achieved an amazing 3rd place in this event, with Rosie coming 1st.  Amelia placed 2nd and 3rd in the other two events - a great medal haul!

And now, we can finally resume PE lessons together in person once again! It has been lovely to see everyone back in school and high attendance for the bubbled internal lacrosse and netball matches at the weekend. We are looking forward to a busy summer term of sports in the sunshine!
