James Cousins Dance Workshop: Contact Contemporary

Thursday 29th November 2018

GCSE and A Level dance students took part in a James Cousins dance workshop, with a focus on a new style of dance: contact contemporary.

The James Cousins Dance Company has a team of internationally renowned dancers, and a rich participation and insight programme, driven by their passion for nurturing and enabling young talent to grow.

Here is what India, one of our dance students, thought of the workshop:

“Participating in the James Cousins dance workshop enabled us to learn a new style of contemporary dance; contact contemporary. Throughout the dance workshop we encountered many challenges whilst working with this new dance style, performing trust falls in a group and rolling over each others’ backs were just a few of the instructions we were asked to do.

The workshop helped us to gain many skills and ideas for our own choreography such as new lifts that will provide a highlight, and we also learnt how we should work closely together to enable safe and effective movements in the lifts.

The dance workshop was really beneficial for our understanding of the set work and we were lucky enough to learn some of the the choreography from the dance itself!” – India S (U5)

Julie and George, from James Cousins Dance Company, said that they were really impressed with our dancers, and our dance students certainly had a lot fun, while learning new contact contemporary dance techniques.
