Queen Anne’s School start reusable coffee cup scheme

Wednesday 2nd May 2018

We strive to teach not only inside the classroom, but to foster awareness and understanding about issues outside of the school. Making the girls aware of the conservational challenges the world faces today, and how they can have a positive impact on the wellbeing of the environment is instilled at the school.

Disposable coffee cups are at the centre point of contention in the public domain. As we look at the news we see companies incentivise customers to stop using paper cups and to start bringing in reusable coffee cups. Costa Coffee, Pret A Manger and Starbucks are now offering up to 50p discount on hot beverages, but just how much waste is the UK producing? Well the UK throws away 2.5 billion disposable coffee cups every year, with less than 1% of coffee cups being recycled.

With this in mind, we are starting an exciting initiative by applying a 20p discount for any students or staff who bring in a reusable cup when purchasing at hot drink at Café 6. Lauren M, Chloe N and Heather A (U6) shared their thoughts on the scheme and discussed how they thought “It is great the school are making a positive change towards helping the environment, with the added benefit that they were able to save 20p per transaction.”
