Live@QA Concert Series: The Queen's Six Review

Tuesday 24th March 2015

On Wednesday 11 March, a cappella vocal group, ‘The Queen’s Six’, visited Queen Anne’s to run a workshop with pupils. On Thursday 12 March, the group also performed a concert attended by pupils, parents and the local community.

‘The Queen’s Six’ are a male vocal group from Windsor Castle, made up of two countertenors, two tenors, a baritone and a bass. By day, they are part of the Choir of men and boys who sing in the Queen’s Free Chapel of St George for the daily services.

Below, Gabrielle Woodward, L6, gives us her review of the workshop:

“On Wednesday 11 March, ‘The Queen’s Six’ came to run a workshop with our school’s VOCES8 group, to help us develop the piece that we are currently preparing for an upcoming concert. Fortunately for us we had chosen a piece which ‘The Queen’s Six’ already had in their concert repertoire and they were therefore able to show us their version and offer us very specific advice as to how we can creatively shape our interpretation of the piece.

It was amazing to receive such positive and helpful feedback from each member of the group and the interactive workshop enabled our school’s a cappella group to work on even the smallest details of the piece. The a cappella group encouraged us to think about the details in the words that we were singing and helped us to truly animate the piece in performance.

The concert the following evening on Thursday 12 March helped truly inspire our group to look at further genres of music which we could prepare in the future. ‘The Queen’s Six’ performed a huge variety of songs from sacred music of Byrd and Tallis to modern arrangements of The Beach Boys. It was an amazing opportunity to watch such a distinguished group perform to such a high standard. The VOCES8 group had a chance to perform in the concert, so that the audience could see the amazing work that we had undertaken alongside ‘The Queen’s Six’ to help transform our piece.”

The next workshop and concert in the Live@QA Concert Series will take place on Thursday 30 April and features The Alluna Ensemble. Founded through a shared desire to promote and perform New Music, The Alluna Ensemble was created by a group of performers from the celebrated Park Lane Group Young Artists Scheme. Dedicated to 20th and 21st Century music, the dynamic Alluna Ensemble offers unusual programmes which present repertoire in interesting and revealing new contexts, relishing genuine discussion and debate with their audiences.
