Live@QA Concert Series – Karis Stretton Workshop Review
Friday 14th March 2014
On Tuesday 11 February, as part of the school’s Live@QA Concert Series, we were delighted to welcome prize-winning pianist Karis Stretton to Queen Anne’s. Karis hosted a workshop for pianists Grade 5 and over and also performed a concert in the evening which was attended by pupils, parents and the local community of Caversham.
One of Queen Anne’s pupils, Charlotte Way, U5, attended the workshop, and shared with us her experience of performing in front of Karis Stretton:
On Tuesday 11 February, I was privileged to be given the opportunity to take part in Karis Stretton’s piano masterclass workshop. At the prospect of performing to such an established musician, we all arrived with a few nerves. However, Karis quickly put us at ease and such an informal atmosphere definitely encouraged us to ask for further ideas and advice, allowing us to get the most out of the experience. In turn, we each worked in detail on particular phrases within our pieces and were even lucky enough to hear a few demonstrations! Listening to such a wonderful pianist playing with such agility and with such delicate tone was inspirational and we all left feeling inspired to perform with the same musicality in the future. With a lunchtime concert approaching later that week, I believe that the masterclass was particularly beneficial to me as I was able to take on board Karis Stretton’s invaluable advice, hopefully reflecting it during my performance of Dmitri Shostakovich’s ‘Prelude in D’ on Friday. Once again, we are extremely grateful to the Music Department for organising such fantastic opportunities.
