Sailing Success For Emily and Philippa

Friday 12th September 2014

Whilst many choose to spend their summer holidays relaxing by a pool or on a beach, Emily and Philippa Heath have spent the summer racing sailing dinghies.  The girls competed separately in a two week regatta held at Itchenor Sailing Club near Chichester; Emily in a 420 and Philippa in a Mirror dingy.  Both competed above their age groups and did extremely well.

After Itchenor, the girls teamed up to compete in the Navigators & General Mirror European Championships held in Brixham, Devon.   The sailing conditions were tricky – at times lots of wind and big seas and at other times very light, shifty airs.  But the girls stuck at it and over a 13 race series, finished not only 12th

overall but also as winners of the Silver Fleet (i.e. the results ignored boats with adults sailing and boats that have been in the RYA National Junior Squad).  It was a great achievement to win this prize in a very competitive fleet and also on the same day as Emily’s 16th birthday and the day after her GCSE results!

This Autumn, the girls are going their separate ways; Emily is going to focus on 420 sailing and Philippa is going to trial for the RYA National Junior Mirror Squad.  But their partnership is not over. In January 2015, Emily and Philippa will sail together again competing in the Mirror World Championships to be held at Theewater, South Africa!
