U4 Pupils Place Second In Microsoft Digigirlz Challenge
Monday 8th December 2014
Eight lucky U4 girls were selected to attend a fantastic event to encourage more women to seek careers in Information Technology. On Friday 28 November, pupils were welcomed at the impressive Microsoft Campus along with girls from twenty other schools.
The first presentation given was from a current employee working as a researcher for Microsoft in Cambridge who explained how she uses IT to predict the extent of future deforestation in the Amazon, based on road building data. Pupils commented that the message that they took from the presentations is that “we should be passionate about our work and take time to discover our real talents.”
To help encourage pupils to fully engage with the presentations given, Microsoft provided prizes for those pupils who could answer certain questions about the presentations. Two of our girls won a new ergonomic mouse and a notebook and the girls even commented that this technique could be adopted at school!
Then came the challenge.
The brief was to design an app for the travel industry and present our advertisment for the app as a video. Girls quickly allocated themselves roles such as Managing Director, Graphic Designer, Filming team and Video Editing team. All the technology that the pupils required for their work was available in a very smart meeting room, which had soft walls for soundproofing. The app designed by Queen Anne’s pupils was called ‘GaPlan’, focusing on the idea of GAP years for everyone, whether you are a student, young families or a retired person. The slogan for the app was ‘Even Gran Can Gap Plan’.
After lunch, pupils returned to the conference theatre and had the opportunity to listen to current employees working for Microsoft on Graduate, Intern and Apprenticeship schemes. The talks were described as inspiring and gave pupils a real insight into the wealth of roles available within the IT sector.
The best moment came at the end when the winners were announced and the two best videos were shown. Our pupils were delighted to come in second place and were thrilled to receive prizes consisting of Amazon vouchers. Congratulations to all our girls who took part in the challenge.
