U4 Experience World of Work Day

Wednesday 17th January 2018

On Friday 12 January the U4 were visited by QAS alumnae for an interactive ‘World of Work’ day. This gave our current girls the opportunity to talk about their career aspirations with girls who have already walked in their footsteps. Our Upper 4’s were put into groups and rotated around the room to speak to our alumnae, it was so lovely to see many of our alumnae discussing their experiences and current job roles.

It was interesting to see how many of the girls had exactly the same worries we had when we were at school choosing our options.”

Amongst our 11 alumnae we had Greer, who left Queen Anne’s in 2010 to study Veterinary Science at the University of Bristol. After qualifying in 2015 she worked in clinical small animal practice,  in  2016 she also started working for the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in Westminster, alongside her normal veterinary work. In 2017 she joined the RCVS on a full time basis as a Policy and Public Affairs Officer, helping develop the RCVS Brexit strategy, and broader issues around veterinary legislation.

Hannah, who read English Literature and American studies at the University of Birmingham, went on to the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and now is in the Royal Logistics Corps.

We had Louisa, who left Queen Anne’s in 2009 to study Psychology, and is now a Research Advisor at a non-profit company which explores business issues and supports people management and development.

I haven’t been back to Queen Anne’s since 2011, it has been such a nostalgic experience.”

Nathania, after leaving school, spent a gap year in New York working as an au pair and upon her return studied English Literature at the University of Birmingham. Now working as a consultant at an insights and innovation agency, she works with a range of global companies to provide human insight-based growth strategies and new product innovation.

We were also joined by Kate, who also left school in 2009 and studied medicine at the University of Nottingham, qualified as a Doctor in 2014 and completed various placements during her two years in her foundation doctor training. Kate then applied for a training post in Psychiatry and is now in her second year of training for this.

This is an exciting time for our U4s as they choose their GCSE Options and begin thinking about their ambitions. After the GCSE Options Evening, which was held on the previous evening, we felt that the World of Work Day gave our girls the chance to have any of their questions answered and become inspired by our alumnae’s careers pathways.

On Thursday 1 February Queen Anne’s will be hosting its annual Careers, Universities and Gap Fair where we will have a range of stall holders from various professions, universities and gap year specialists. This year we have a talk from Coca-Cola about apprenticeships, and University College London who aim to help our girls gain a more realistic view of what university is going to be like. For the first time the evening will also feature opportunities for our girls to practice their networking skills with professionals in a new session.

If you are able  to help by giving us an hour of your time between 18.30 – 20.30 on Thursday 1 February please fill out the form below. We would be delighted for you to come and talk about your chosen career and answer any questions.

Form to help at the Careers, Universities and Gap Fair
