LEAVE
A LEGACY

OVERVIEW

If you are thinking about leaving a gift in your Will to Queen Anne’s, thank you.  Every bequest, whatever the size, helps support the school and the girls, whether it is development as a whole or a specific area of particular significance to you.  For example, perhaps you would like to support a bursary and help give the benefit of a Queen Anne’s education to a girl for whom it would otherwise be out of reach.  We will always do our best to respect any wishes that you express.

Whether you are writing your Will for the first time or amending it with a Codicil, leaving a gift to Queen Anne’s is simple. We are very happy to talk to you about you about your wishes although please rest assured we will not ask you share the amount you have in mind unless you would like to.  However, we are unable to give financial or legal advice and, given the importance of your decision, we do recommend that you talk to your solicitor about your estate plans.

There are a number of different types of legacy.

INFORMATION ABOUT LEGACIES

There are four types of gift that can be included in a new Will or, for existing Wills, in a Codicil:

  • Residuary Legacy – A residuary legacy is the gift of the remainder, or a percentage of the remainder, of your estate once distributions to family and friends have been made and all testamentary debts and expenses have been paid
  • Pecuniary Legacy – This is the bequest of a specific sum of money. A pecuniary legacy can be index-linked to ensure that its intended value is maintained over the lifetime of the donor.
  • Specific Legacy – A specific legacy refers to the gift of a specific asset, such as a property,  rather than a monetary amount.
  • Reversionary Legacy – A reversionary legacy is effectively a postponed gift. It allows a specifically named person or persons to benefit from your estate (or part of it) during their lifetime and on their death, your estate (or part of it) then passes to Queen Anne’s.

TAX EFFICIENT GIVING

Queen Anne’s is a registered charity (charity number 312700) and therefore all legacies made to the school are exempt from UK Inheritance and Capital Gains Taxes. Under current rules, if you leave 10% or more of your chargeable net estate to charity, the Inheritance Tax rate on the whole of your taxable estate is reduced from 40% to 36%.
