Sixth form charity performance of Be My Baby

Sixth formers at Queen Anne’s School put on a charity performance of Be My Baby on 18 and 19 February in aid of Queen Anne’s Partner School Project, which raises money to support the Bahowo School and village in Indonesia.  In the last year the project has raised more than £10,000 to rebuild the village school and construct a new medical centre.

The play, which is described as “an emotional yet comic” piece of drama, was performed, choreographed and directed entirely by students.   Set against a backdrop of social attitudes in the 1960s, it follows the emotional journey of four young women, who are forced to give up their babies for adoption.

On the acting and production team were Livvy Myles-Till, Beth Holland, Georgia Lester, Stephanie Leonard, Zahra Davidson and Grace Mills, with Charlotte Thompson controlling the sound and lighting.  The girls were backed by 14 sixth form singers and a drummer.

The girls explained that they took the project on because of their “collective passion is drama”.  “We thought we would use this interest to raise money for the Bahowo village in Indonesia.   We have worked incredibly hard.  We discovered that there is much more to putting on a production than one would imagine, such as the organisation, direction and promotion of the play.   It has therefore been a useful learning experience for all of us as well as a lot of fun”.

Speaking about the production, Mrs Julia Harrington, Headmistress, said: “The Partner School Project has really fired the imagination of our girls, who have organised a variety of fundraising events and activities to support the Bahowo School and village in Indonesia.  Funds raised by the school for this project have been of enormous benefit to the whole community.  I am extremely proud of the girls for such a professional accomplishment and their efforts to help this very worth cause!”
