Senior School Concert Review

Wednesday 20th May 2015

The Senior School concert took place on Thursday 7 May 2015. We were treated to a fantastic array of performances ranging from the impressionistic piano music of Debussy to Lennon and McCartney’s Hey Jude, Schumann Lieder and the advanced piano writing of Edwin Roxburgh.

The concert opened with two works from the VOCES8 Project.  As ever, polished and exceptionally well-rehearsed. Ally Stewart Ashley performed Schumann’s Widmung; Ally displayed a deep understanding of this repertoire and her control and execution of the German language was outstanding. Emily Heath, equally performed to a very fine standard in her performance of Reinecke’s Undiene Sonata.

More contemporary/popular repertoire was executed with brilliance by Rosie Dart, Annabel Marlow and Alice Knott. All three pupils demonstrated a fine understanding of this particular genre.

Natasha Canter and Cherry Pei performed Mozart’s Sonata K. 381 with poise, accuracy and elegance, acknowledging the important compositional features of the classical period; and Zoe Kang performed Chopin’s Nocturne in B minor with great confidence.

The first half of the concert closed with the Chamber Choir performing works by Mawby and Nardone.

The second half of the concert concentrated on some of our outgoing Upper Sixth.  Outstanding performances were given by Natasha Canter, Izzy Sasada, Elizabeth Wong, Elizabeth Ng, Laura Burnett and Lydia Marshall. Their performances confirmed they are highly accomplished musicians enjoying the challenge of demanding repertoire.  Hattie Herridge, Anna Way and Charlotte Stanton are also to be commended for their excellent performances of repertoire by Goulding, Gibbs, Debussy and Schumann.

An exceptional evening. A massive thanks to the commitment of the pupils and dedicated music staff.
