Dominic Peckham Visits Queen Anne's
Tuesday 2nd February 2016
On Thursday 28 January, the music department were delighted to welcome conductor, presenter and educator, Dominic Peckham. Dominic was invited to Queen Anne’s to speak at morning assembly as well as work with the school’s VOCES8 group and individual classes. During the afternoon, Dominic then featured as the guest judge for the highly anticipated Inter-House Music Competition.
Below, U6 student and member of the VOCES8 group, Emily Heath, provides an account of working with Dominic Peckham:
It was great to welcome Dominic Peckham to Queen Anne’s on Thursday 28 January. Dominic is known all over the world for his inspirational work with choral groups and especially here in the UK as the Assistant Music Director of the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain and television work with Gareth Malone for the series ‘The Naked Choir’.
Dominic started the day by working with the whole school and staff for an assembly of movement and singing which got the day off to an exhilarating start. He also spent time working with individual classes throughout the morning. At lunchtime, our VOCES8 Project Group performed ‘I Need Your Love’ by Ellie Goulding which really impressed Dominic due to the tight rhythms and excellent control of the harmony. He spent time working with the group on the essential qualities for performance that close-harmony singing requires, this included adding some body percussion!
The group’s next task was to work with Dominic on improvisation around a key or a piece of music leading to us experimenting with rhythms, mouth and body percussion. It was amazing to find out what can be produced by the frequencies of sound from the body, especially Tosin’s bass drum sound! We had a great time and learnt a huge amount which will help our future performances. Many thanks Dominic for being so hugely inspiring!”
At 4.00pm in the School Hall, L4-U5 pupils then participated in the Inter-House Music Competition. All five of our Junior houses (Ffyler, Maddock, Webbe, Wilkins and Wisdome) performed an Abba song as well as an ensemble piece. Congratulations to Webbe House who were announced as the overall winners of the competition for their performance of ‘Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)’ and a group ensemble of ‘Price Tag’ by Jessie J.
