Sporting Highlights at Queen Anne's

Tuesday 22nd September 2015

Please find below for a weekly sporting update from U6 student, Sheyi Blackett, Head of Sport:

On Saturday 19 September, our lacrosse teams started their 2015-16 campaign at home against Downe House with the 1st team starting proceedings with the kind of spirit and determination that all Queen Anne’s girls are encouraged to aspire to. After a very early lead they went behind but their heads did not go down and they kept fighting back. With just 3 minutes to go they had fallen behind 6-9 but, encouraged by their inspirational captain, Bella Austin, they rallied superbly. They netted 3 excellent late goals and then goalkeeper Shana Hart made a crucial save in the dying seconds to secure a very exciting 9-all draw.  Ella McNeill played brilliantly and was named the Players’ Player, with commendations going to Ella Harris and Shana Hart, both making excellent debuts for the senior team.

The most impressive result of the afternoon was the 9-1 victory by the U14 team, who dominated throughout.  Charlotte Derde and Emily Oram were both named Players’ Player with Olivia Gryce, Amber Richards and new girl Evie Harris commended. A special mention also goes to the U13A team who drew 5-all in an extremely competitive match. Alice Cunliffe started the season in really good form and stood out as the Players’ Player with commendations going to Jasmine Booth, Anjola Ajibulu and Jasmine Veitch.  Downe House proved too strong in the other matches played although some of their winning margins did not reflect the closeness of the games, providing much encouragement for our girls for future fixtures.

Earlier in the week, on Tuesday 15 September, the netballers also started their competitive campaign. On Tuesday the U15 and U16 teams played St Gabriel’s in atrocious weather conditions, recording three wins out of four matches. The U16A team were unfortunate to lose their shooter with a hamstring injury that impacted on their 8-11 defeat, but the team played really well and were all complimented for their positive attitude in difficult circumstances. In the U16B match captain Rebecca Washer excelled on and off the court and was voted the Player of the Match in their convincing 11-5 victory. The U15A team completely dominated their match, winning 25-4. They got off to an excellent start and maintained possession well, with Annabelle Roberts named Player of the Match for her ability to effectively convert the numerous turnovers made by an excellent defence. The U15B team also made an impressive start to the season, winning 9-8 with a special mention going to Christine Knecht de Massy, who made her netball debut; an amazing achievement for someone new to the sport.

And finally, on Thursday 17 September, some of our younger teams took on The Abbey, recording one win, one draw and two losses. The U13A and U12A teams were up against very strong sides and were convincingly beaten but all the players worked extremely hard throughout the match and will have gained much experience for the rest of the season. This is especially the case for the U12 side who had just returned from the PGL trip and played together for the very first time. The U13B team drew 11-11 in a nail biting match thanks to some very intelligent play against a much taller side. Meanwhile the U12B team enjoyed a great 9-1 victory, thanks in part to some excellent shooting by Player of the Match, Sahiba Jabble.

Well done to everyone who has represented the school at sport this week. Listings of all the results, Players’ Players and commended girls are posted on the relevant Sport Noticeboards and all the results will be posted shortly on the ‘Fixtures Pro’ online pages that can be accessed via the new sport website
