Queen Anne’s Make It to Botswana!

Monday 18th September 2017

In the wind and rain on Friday 15 September, the pupils and staff (and dogs!) of Queen Anne’s School completed their epic walk to Botswana.

The challenge began in earnest on Monday morning with the aim being to walk the 5456 miles that separate the town of Reading and Botswana. The effort was all in aid of the Kaudwane School in the Kalahari Desert, our international charity for this year. Girls and staff were out bright and early on Monday morning and were putting in the miles in the changeable conditions.

On Tuesday evening, the U6 girls from Michell House completed over 250miles! A heroic effort late into the cold night all in aid of charity. It was a real show of the community spirit that runs throughout Queen Anne’s.

Mr Blunt was a big driving force throughout the week and by Wednesday he had set a 50 lap challenge to all the girls.

There is no way that anyone will beat me” he said.

However, Celia from Wilkins house took on his challenge and would go on to walk a staggering 55 laps on her own. It was an outstanding individual effort. Celia said on the final afternoon:

“I’m going for 51 and I want more if I’ve got time! I have to beat Mr Blunt!”

As Friday afternoon came around, there were just over 1000 miles to be walked, which meant staff and pupils were walking 2-3 laps of the course each. There were downpours and high winds but they would not dampen the spirit of our determined walkers.

Hauwa (U5) of Maddock House was heard shouting to Mr Blunt (lap counter):

“I did 5 yesterday, don’t forget them!”

Claudia (4) of Wilkins House was seen putting in a sterling effort by running a few of her laps and said:

“I’ve been running it to keep my fitness up!”

As Mrs McGrenary, Head of Lower School, passed through the start to complete yet another lap she said:

“Another five from me!”

The weather was deteriorating and the laps got harder, especially for a group of Maddock girls who had done such an excellent job throughout the week, as they shouted:

“Our legs are hurting!”

However, the indomitable spirit of Queen Anne’s girls shone through and just as buses arrived to pick the girls up, the target was hit! Congratulations to the whole Queen Anne’s community!
