An Inspirational Music Tour to Krakow

Friday 28th April 2017

On the last day of the Lent term,37 musicians and 6 members of staff left for Krakow, Poland, for this year’s music tour.

They had five days of concerts and visits booked and the prospect of the sun shining with temperatures reaching 24 degrees, which was very welcome after the long Lent term.

The girls linked with a local High School in Krakow and the first concert was shared with the student choir from the school. However, the concert nearly didn’t happen as the van with all the music and instruments, driven by Mr Haysted and Mr Padley, got stuck in heavy traffic for three hours near Wroclaw and just made it with minutes to spare!

The second concert was in the Mariacki Church, which is in the central square in Krakow. The choir performed from the organ gallery and really rose to the challenge having not been able to rehearse due to services in the church. Mr Giddens also performed two magnificent organ solos including a remarkable work based on the Crucifixion by Dupre.

Our final concert was in the village of Lipnica where we also sang for the Mass. This was a fine church with a very appreciative audience and we were again joined by the choir from the High School.

As well as music, the girls visited the Salt Mines and Camille Morana played an unaccompanied violin solo in the church that the miners created deep underground. There was also a very moving and emotional visit to Auschwitz and the Jewish areas in Krakow, which really helped to broaden the girls understanding of the history of Poland and its Jewish population.

A very memorable and enjoyable tour with excellent performances by the Chamber Choir, Chamber Orchestra, Saxaholics, Wind Quintet, Clarinetix and soloists. Well done, and thank you to all involved.
