GB Rowing News
Thursday 23rd May 2013
Following training with the school squad, two of our junior girls have been provisionally accepted into the GB Start Rowing Programme. Sheyi Blackett (L5) & Poppy Leach (U4) attended a testing day at the GB Rowing centre in Caversham earlier this month and performed exceptionally well in their fitness and strength tests. Both girls have been given a training programme to follow over the coming weeks and will be re-tested again during the summer.
The GB Start Rowing Programme is a ground-breaking talent identification programme which was established in 2001 with funding from the Lottery Sports Fund with the aim to build the future of the GB Rowing Team by identifying and developing potential Olympians.
Poppy also competed as part of three crews for Queen Anne’s who joined the Shiplake Vikings at Maidenhead Junior Invitational Regatta on Sunday 19 May.
The two J13 crews were; Alice Hatfield (4s), Grace Swiatek (4s), Fabby Roux(4s) and Carrie Hall (4s), and Saskia Watson (4s), Megan Tooley(4s), Katie Green (4s) and Olivia James (4s). Both crews performed really well on the day, in their first competitive event. All the girls tried really hard and put in a good effort in their races.
Our J14 crew, Susie Liddell (U4), Poppy Leach (U4), Kate Tremayne (U4) and Charlotte Gwillim (4s), raced three times and won their first race in The Plate event. They were knocked out in the second Plate race by a crew from Eton Excelsior, but put in an impressive performance for a relatively new crew.
The feedback from girls and parents was that a good day was had by all and that they are looking forward to their next outing.
