On Friday 1 July, a piece of music, written by U6 student Gabrielle Woodward, will have its world premiere at a special 100th year anniversary concert commemorating The Battle of Jutland and The Battle of the Somme. Below, Gabby explains more about the significance of the upcoming concert:

“I was commissioned to write a piece for the Dockland Sinfonia orchestra commemorating The Battle of Jutland, considered to be the only major naval battle of World War One. The concert is in association with The East End Film Festival and also commemorates The Battle of the Somme; therefore, the orchestra will also be performing The Battle of the Somme’s score live alongside the film. Admiral Alan William John West, Baron West of Spithead GCB, DSC, PC, former First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff will be presenting the Battle of Jutland and then will introduce my new work “Jutland, Lest We Forget”, which is approximately 10 minutes in length. While my piece is being played, archived photos from the Battle will be shown to the audience.

In other news, the Junior Guildhall School of Music have awarded me the Academic Achievement Prize, which will be presented to me on Saturday 9 July.”
