Success On The Sea For Emily and Pippi

Monday 12th January 2015

Last week sisters Emily, L6, and Pippi Heath, 4s, competed for Great Britain in the Mirror World Championships held on the huge Theewater Dam situated in the heart of the South African Cape wine and fruit growing region. It was a truly stunning setting – the lake surrounded by ruggedly beautiful mountains with forest and fruit fields running down to its shores.  With Cape sunshine and plenty of wind, it really was perfect conditions for the gathering of 60 boats from the UK, Australia, South Africa, Japan and France.

With the first day blown off because of too much wind, the remaining days followed a pattern of light airs until around 1pm when the wind steadily built resulting in very testing conditions.

Emily and Pippi got off to a fantastic start – leading Race 1 of the World Championships only to sail into a wind hole 20 meters from the finish line which allowed several boats behind to overtake them.  They were a little disappointed with the resulting 6th place.  Again Emily and Pippi excelled in the lighter airs in the first race on Day 2 – finishing 4th.   The girls achieved their best results in the few light air races but battled hard in the heavy winds to achieve a very credible 19th place overall.  The Championship was won by a South African brother and sister team with an Australian boat taking second.  The best British boats finished third and fourth.

With great sailing, vibrant, cultural diversity and the making of new friends from right across the World, this has been a truly memorable experience for both Emily and Pippi, not to mention the Cobra’s swimming in the lake and the glorious climate!

Thank you to Mrs Heath for providing us with a write-up from the event.
