Sport Roundup – Monday 1 February

Monday 1st February 2016

This Exeat weekend was a busy one for many of our girls involved in sport.

On Saturday 30 January, both our U14 and U16 netball squads played in the Regional Schools’ Netball Tournament, making history at this level for Queen Anne’s. The U16 team fought hard in their qualifying pool but missed out on a place in the knockout stage despite impressive victories against Oxford High and Sir William Borlase’s School. Alex Griffin, Georgina Evans and Katie Green were commended.

Meanwhile the U14 team went one stage further, reaching the semi-finals as runners up in their pool. They were then drawn against the eventual tournament winners, Beaconsfield High, losing narrowly 7-9 in what was a very tough, physical match. It was a fabulous squad effort by all, with Talia Jones and Hazelle Mendel-Idowu commended for their resilience and level of play.

On Sunday 31 January, our U19 and U14 trampoline teams also made history, competing at the Zonal stage of the National Schools’ Trampoline Championships in the Novice category. The U19 team, competing without one of their regional winning team members due to illness, finished in a very impressive 5th place.  Our top individual performer was Abby Sloman, who had also been in our U16 netball squad the day before.

Meanwhile, our very young U14 team, finished in a highly commendable 7th place, with Aimee Langwade our top point scorer. Both these teams have a very bright future, with several of the girls still qualifying in their age category for another two years.

Congratulations also go to Lauren Church, who picked up a team silver medal in the U20 Southern Cross Country Championships, competing for Reading Athletic Club alongside former Queen Anne’s pupil and junior international, Jessica Gibbon. Hundreds of girls took part in this very muddy and hilly championships, which also included Emmeline Bolton in a younger age category.

Finally, a quick ‘well done’ to all the pupils who competed in away school fixtures last week. A special mention goes to the U16A netball team, who beat Wycombe Abbey School 22-12 and to our U13 and U15 swimmers who came in 2nd place in a triangular competition, also at Wycombe Abbey. The team spirit was superb and there were some fabulous individual wins by Amber Richards, Amy McCall and Niamh McKenna.
