Queen Anne's to join 'Richard Whitehead Runs Britain'

Friday 6th September 2013

A team of 24 Queen Anne’s runners will be supporting Richard Whitehead, the gold medallist from last year’s amazing Paralympic Games, on Friday 13 September 2013 as he embarks on an extraordinary run to become the first double amputee to run the length of Britain, in doing so, completing 40 back to back marathons in 40 days.  Aside from wanting to celebrate the anniversary of the Paralympic Games and to prove that a ‘life without limits is possible’, he is taking on this extraordinary challenge in the hope of raising significant funds for two chosen charities, namely Scope and Sarcoma UK.

Richard visited Queen Anne’s in April when he officially opened our Spring Fayre and the idea of a Queen Anne’s School team running alongside him on a section of his epic mission was born. The team consists of staff members, including our Headmistress, Mrs Julia Harrington, current girls, alumni and parents – representing all members of our wide community. Out of the team of 24 runners, 16 have signed up to run 10km and the other 8 runners will run 5km.  The start location will be Tredington near Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire.

So far the Queen Anne’s team have raised over £2,000 in sponsorship including support from some famous sporting stars:

  • Jessica Ennis-Hill, British Olympic Heptahlon Champion
  • Sir Phillip Craven, President of the International Paralympic Committee
  • Jonathan Edwards, Former British Champion Triple Jumper
  • Alan Pascoe, 1972 Olympic Silver Medallist
  • Tom Hollingsworth, Chief Executive of the British Paralympic Association
  • Michael Johnson, Former Olympic American Sprinter
  • Lizzie Armitstead, British Professional Track and Road Racing Cyclist
  • Roger Black, Former British Athlete
