Queen Anne's Parent Completes The Great Ethiopian Run

Friday 28th November 2014

Congratulations to one of our parents, Mrs Julie Rayfield, who completed  The Great Ethiopian Run on Sunday 23 November in Addis Ababa. Mrs Rayfield finished in the first 12,000 runners, earning a green ribbon medal. Mrs Rayfield explains more about the race below:

“I completed the run on Sunday, along with over 35,000 other runners.  The event is more of a celebration of running than a race, with people chanting, singing and dancing their way round.  Despite the altitude (2400m), I managed to finish in the first 12,000 to earn a green ribbon medal.

The day after the race, the Womankind Worldwide runners (the charity which Mrs Rayfield is raising money for) visited a local charity partner, the Association for Women’s Sanctuary and Development.  We met with staff, discussed their work and current pressing issues, enjoyed a traditional Ethiopian lunch and then visited their safe house.  The safe house for women and girls is the only one in Addis Ababa and so struggles to take in all the desperate cases referred to them.  They provide psychological and medical support and help survivors of gender based violence finish schooling or acquire skills training, so that they can be economically independent.”

If you would like to make a donation, please visit Mrs Rayfield’s Just Giving page.
