L4 Pupils Participate In Guinness World Record Book Swop Event
Monday 9th February 2015
On Friday 6 February, L4 pupils participated in a Guinness World Record Attempt for National Libraries Day 2015. 48 pupils were attempting to break the record for ‘Most Books Exchanged in 8 Hours’ by swopping their own books under the watchful eye of adjudicators including BBC Radio Berkshire DJ, Mike Read.
Over a period of 30 minutes, pupils excitedly swapped books amongst themselves, with each book swap documented by the two adjudicators, Ms Anita Grosz and Miss Jacqueline Brooke-Mee. A selection of pupils, including the school’s Head Librarian, Mrs Helen Norris, were then interviewed by Mike Read for his afternoon radio show.
After taking part in the Book Swapping event, L4 pupil Kaia Harte, said,
“After swapping my book entitled ‘Tales of Terror from Tunnel’s Mouth’, the book that really captured my eye was ‘Escape from Shangri-La’. I have already read other books, written by the author Michael Morpurgo, and I was intrigued to explore this particular story. I really enjoy reading in my spare time as books enable you to escape from reality and transport you into another world.”
L4 pupil, Sofya Oblivantseva, said,
“The reason why I chose to select ‘Mockingbird’ by Kathryn Ershire is because the book is not something I would ordinarily read and I wanted to try something different and step outside of my comfort zone. Reading books written in English has really helped improve my spoken English and it has given me more confidence.”
Speaking about the Guinness World Record Book Swap event, Mrs Julia Harrington, Headmistress at Queen Anne’s School said,
“Pupils at Queen Anne’s School are delighted to be taking part in the Guinness World Record Attempt for National Libraries Day 2015; the event is a fun way to promote our love of books and to help highlight the benefits of having a school library.”
Schools across the country took part in the event, which was organised by the Past President of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) and School Librarian, Barbara Band, to coincide with National Libraries Day 2015, which took place on Saturday 7 February.
