Gabrielle Announced As Finalist For The Young Composers Award

Monday 20th April 2015

We are delighted to announce that Gabrielle Woodward, L6, has been announced on the shortlist for the National Centre of Early Music (NCEM) Young Composers Award 2015. The 2015 NCEM Young Composers Award is presented in association with BBC Radio 3 and Scotland’s leading baroque ensemble, the award-winning Dunedin Consort directed by conductor, organist, harpsichordist and scholar, John Butt.

Gabrielle is one of two finalists for the 18 years and under category for her composition, “Shepherd No More Singing” and will find out whether she has won the award on Thursday 14 May, when a shortlist of entries will be presented by the Dunedin Consort in a workshop led by composer Christopher Fox.

At 7.30pm on Thursday 14 May, the Dunedin Consort will perform each of the pieces in a public concert at the NCEM in the presence of a panel of judges – John Butt, Director of the Dunedin Consort; Les Pratt, BBC Radio 3 Producer; and Delma Tomlin, Director of the National Centre for Early Music. The winners will then be announced after the concert. The two winning works will be premiered by the Dunedin Consort in a public concert that will be recorded for broadcast on BBC Radio 3’s Early Music Show.

For the 2015 Award, composers were invited to create new settings for a short dramatic scene from eitherOrfeo or Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda. Both works were originally set to music by Claudio Monteverdi, the composer who brought a new dramatic life to the relationship between words and music. The new works are written for two or three singers accompanied by a small ensemble of baroque instruments.

From everyone at Queen Anne’s, we wish Gabrielle the best of luck at the awards ceremony on Thursday 14 May.
