Director of Finance To Do Battle Against Team of England Cricket Legends

Thursday 10th July 2014

In 1764 George III was on the throne, James Hargreaves invented the Spinning Jenny, the eight year old Mozart composed his Symphony No.1 whilst in London, the Grey Coat Hospital School had been open in Westminster for just 66 years ……..and the gentleman of Odiham and Greywell played their first game of cricket.

This year Odiham and Greywell Cricket Club celebrates its 250th anniversary. Reckoned to be the second oldest club in England it is still thriving with several senior sides including 2 women’s teams and 200 colt members.

As part of the club’s 250th anniversary celebrations, Mr Ed Hellings, Queen Anne’s Director of Finance and Administration, will have the honour of captaining the Club against the Professional Cricketers’ Association in a 20/20 match on Thursday 31 July at Odiham. The Professional Cricketers’ Association side will contain mostly ex England players – Mark Ramprakash, Matthew Hoggard, Paul Nixon, Shaun Udal, Devon Malcolm and Alex Tudor are already confirmed.

Devon MalcolmMr Hellings explained, “We are a historic Club and we take our cricket seriously, but we want to have fun as well. Captaining the Club in this game is going to be a fantastic experience and one I am really looking forward to. One of the great things about the Club is that we promote girls’ and women’s cricket just as much as the men’s and boys’ game. One of the leading wicket takers in the men’s 1st XI last year was Becky Hartnett, who plays for Hampshire Ladies. The men simply can’t deal with her!”

All this represents an amazing recovery from January 2012, when thieves broke into the previous pavilion and set it alight. The damage was so extensive that the pavilion could not be rebuilt and the club had to raise funds to build a new one. The England and Wales Cricket Board and RAF Odiham were particularly helpful with both financial and practical assistance at the time, but it left the club with a substantial loan to repay to the ECB. The idea of the day is to entertain the crowd, promote cricket and hopefully make some money to pay off the loan.

Matthew HoggardMr Hellings continued, “It should be a really entertaining day. We are looking forward to losing quite a few balls in the surrounding fields if Mark Ramprakash gets going! Please come along and support us if you can.”
