Holmes is a boarding and day House for the Lower Sixth Form students. Lower Sixth girls either have single rooms or share a room with a boarder or day girl. Every girl, day and boarding, has a desk and study facilities to enable them to work during free periods during the day.

The House has excellent facilities. There are two large, comfortable ‘sits’ for the girls to relax in, with sofas, chairs and a TV with freeview and DVD/video players, and a fully equipped kitchen. The kitchen is stocked with fruit, bread, milk and butter every day and is a place where the girls can socialise and cook their own snacks and supper. The house also has a laundry room with washing machines and dryers for the girls to use. Individual study bedrooms are supplemented with an IT room which has four computers and printers, and laptops are available for girls to borrow. Holmes is fitted with wireless internet, allowing girls to connect at any time using the school’s or their own laptops.
Each weekend activities are organised for the girls. These can include rugby matches, shopping excursions, trips to London and the theatre, and at the beginning of the academic year the lower sixth girls take a trip together to the Isle of Wight for a weekend of sailing and windsurfing. The Lower Sixth ball held in February includes boys from The Oratory and Shiplake who also join the girls for socials and activities – in particular the extremely popular ballroom dancing classes.
Having grown up in the school, the prospect of being in the sixth form was always an exciting one. Now in the Lower Sixth I can really express who I have grown up to be; through working independently, undertaking responsibilities within the school and as a person for the younger girls to look up to.

In the Lower Sixth you have so much more freedom and the teachers treat you like equals. There is more of a family atmosphere around the house as you are always together as a year.
