Our aim is to encourage girls to become independent learners through consideration of the results they obtain from practical activities and to ensure they have all the skills, both practical and theoretical, to ensure a smooth progression from L4 to A Level. Experiments are enjoyable and spark the students’ interest in this subject.

The Department

Head of Chemistry: Mrs Barbara Orpwood
Chemistry: Ms Caroline Adler
Chemistry: Miss Annabel Oddie
Chemistry: Dr Valerie Vincent (Director of Sixth Form)

The Science Centre is a state-of-the art building with seven laboratories, all are fully networked with computer points at each work space. A class set of laptops is available for accessing the internet and the VLE (virtual learning environment), for modelling, simulations and data-logging. Every lab has a data projector, with most also having Smart Boards. The building has a dedicated Sixth Form computer suite, a dark room and an integral greenhouse on the top floor.

Extra Curriculuar Activities

Learning should not all be about achieving curriculum aims so we try to take as many girls as possible to outside lectures, fun days and competitions, which help to stimulate their interest in the subject:

  • U6 student, Ailsa Maclean, was awarded a prize for best A Level student from the Society of Chemical Industries.
  • L6 took part in a week’s university experience via the ‘Headstart’ initiative.
  • Girls from L5-U6 have the opportunity to attend three-day summer chemistry camps at top universities.
  • As a department we take part in the British Association of Young Scientists Silver CREST Awards which involves independent research projects.
  • Junior girls (L4-U5) enter chemistry practical competitions.
  • Sixth Form chemists are visited regularly by outside speakers from places such as the Royal Society of Chemistry and Society of Chemical Engineers.
  • Three chemistry clinics are offered per week to provide academic and prep support.
