Science fun

As part of National Science and Engineering Week Queen Anne's invited pupils from local primary schools to take part in an exciting range of scientific events. More than 200 children attended from Kidmore End, Thameside, The Hill, Emmer Green and Caversham Primary.

Year 7 pupils enjoyed a fascinating multi-sensory presentation about the universe inside a mini-planetarium known as the ‘Star Dome', learning first-hand from a visiting astrophysicist about astronomy and space travel.

The school was also pleased to welcome Jonathan Cleverley with his ‘Jungle Road Show', featuring a number of tropical species of invertebrates and reptiles. Year 8, Year 10 and some sixth form pupils were given the chance to handle these creatures, and were then able to learn more about them through an intriguing presentation, which used super-macro technology to reveal tiny details about the animals that they would never normally get to see.

Pupils participated in competitions and activities relating to the preservation of the planet: ‘Endanger Rangers', ‘Save our Species' and the ‘Eerie Silence' - what you would say if you could send a message into space.

As part of the ‘National Save Our Bees Campaign, bee-friendly flower seeds were planted by a group of enthusiastic Year 7 pupils with some help from upper sixth scientists.

National Science and Engineering Week features a national programme of events celebrating science, engineering and technology and its importance in our lives. Hundreds of thousands of people across the UK take part in the events which are coordinated annually by The British Science Association.

Mark Rich, Head of Science, said: ‘We were delighted to welcome so many children from local schools to share this exciting opportunity. All of the children were hugely enthusiastic and found the activities both enjoyable and inspiring'.
