Queen Anne's Senior Officers for 2010/11 began their new roles on Tuesday 15 June with a visit to Mansion House in London.
Aisling Byrne-Hanson and Hannah Bisbas, Deputy Head Girls, Cameron Troake, Head of Student PR, and Holly MacAndrews, Head of Charities, were joined by sixth formers from Harrow to take part in the Special Rose Day Collections organised by Alexandra Rose Charities. On behalf of the Lord Mayor, Peter Cook, the Sheriff of the City of London, received a rose from the students and made a contribution to the charity's funds.
After the presentation, the Sheriff talked to the students about his role before giving them a tour of Mansion House, including the vault which contains the royal swords and spectre.
Mansion House is a rare surviving Georgian town palace, located close to the Bank of England. With its magnificent interiors and elegant furniture, it provides the Lord Mayor of the City of London with living, working and entertainment space. Built in the age of Hogarth, the palace is a symbol of the City of London as the world's leading international financial and trading centre.
Alexandra Rose, which is led by Margaret Stock, National Director and Queen Anne's Old Girl, works with charities and community organisations across the country helping them to raise funds for their work with vulnerable people.
The Rose Day Collection tradition began with Queen Alexandra, the widow of Edward VII, who set up the charity in 1912. During a trip to Denmark, she was greatly inspired by a parish priest who cared for homeless and hungry children with money raised by selling the roses in his garden. On her return home, the Queen declared that each year a summer's day would be set aside to raise money for a wide range of charities, and each person who gave money would be given a rose.
