Last year saw the launch of an annual event in July with Queen Anne's Head Girls meeting with the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, helping the charity with their Rose Day Collections. Sarah Gordon, Isobel Petersen and Louisa Gayford were joined by Lizzie Cundy to sell a rose to Boris, and the next elected Head Girls will help with the charity's collections in July.
The Rose Day tradition began with Queen Alexandra who set up the charity in 1912. Margaret Stock, a past pupil of Queen Anne's, was appointed National Director of the charity in 2009. Alexandra Rose works to help with the needs of children, people with disabilities, vulnerable adults, at risk people of all ages, ex-service personnel, the lonely, the elderly and the bereaved.
Queen Anne's student charity committee organised fundraising activities in aid of the charity last term and Head of Student Charities, Alexandra MacKenzie-Smith, presented Margaret Stock with a cheque for £1250.
Lizzie Cundy is a strong supporter of Alexandra Rose and helps to raise awareness of the charity as well as attending fundraising events.
Queen Anne's girls met Margaret and Lizzie in Café 6, the school's sixth form café, to talk to them about their respective careers and also hear about Margaret's schooldays at Queen Anne's in the mid 60s.
Margaret said: ‘It is wonderful to be back at the school as my time here was very special. I am delighted that a bond has now been formed between Alexandra Rose Charities and Queen Anne's, and long may it continue. I was pleased to be able to introduce the girls to Lizzie Cundy, who became a supporter of the charity at the beginning of last year and has been fantastic at raising awareness of this unique charity in every possible way'.
