Field trip to Malhamdale

U4s studying GCSE Geography went on a field trip to Malhamdale in Yorkshire over the weekend to practise collecting and analysing data for their GCSE controlled assessment task.

Malhamdale is a very popular tourist area in the Yorkshire Dales and it forms part of the Pennine Way. As such, there are a number of issues regarding the impact of tourists on the environment and on the local people who live and work in the area. The girls carried out a number of surveys that would enable them to assess the impacts of tourists on the area.

Gill Little, Head of Geography, said: ‘The trip was a great success.  Not only did the girls learn a lot about fieldwork techniques, they were also able to appreciate and understand this dramatic limestone landscape that displays textbook features of glacial erosion and deposition.  The girls' appreciation of the landscape was apparent by the number of comments made about wanting to return to the area for a holiday'.
