Drama news

It was another busy term for the Drama Department at Queen Anne's. For the first time, we entered girls at the Woodley Arts Festival and we were very pleased with the results. Jess Webber and Molly Schofield, Year 12 girls, were competing in the Year 13 and above category and they did very well in their performance of A Midsummer Night's Dream (at 9.00am on a Sunday morning). They were awarded a merit for their performance. Meanwhile Angelica Hill and Amelia de Normann were ‘highly commended' for their solo performances.

Not to be out-done, the L5 Dramanauts gave us a lovely showcase evening earlier in the term. The evening featured work the girls had been preparing in lessons and it provided a good balance of different styles. From the physical demands of a dramatic interpretation of Jabberwocky to the inventiveness required for the devising work based on the text Too Much Punch for Judy and the comedic skills required for an improvised piece based on Our Day Out.

The highlight of the term, though, was the Middle School Production of The Demon Headmaster. The rehearsals had begun when the school was buried under a foot of snow, but by the time the performances came around the crocuses and daffs were in bloom and there was laughter in the air.

The cast had been told at the first rehearsal that the aim of the production was to provoke 'a laugh a minute' from the audience. Not only was this achieved, but the actors had just as much fun as the audience (especially with the appearance of various photos on stage, unseen by the audience, on the last night!).

Next term will be equally as busy, with various ‘preview' performances of examination pieces, the examination performances themselves, a LAMDA Showcase and, of course, the Junior Production of Alice in Wonderland directed by Miss French, on Wednesday 23, Thursday 24 and Friday 25 June.
