Afghan Action operates carpet factories in Afghanistan, which provide places for young men and women to train to become carpet weavers and learn to read and write. 

The crazy socks and tights day, which charged each girl £1.50 to take part, forms part of a series of fundraising initiatives, including a Design a Carpet Competition, which is open to Queen Anne's pupils to create a carpet design.  The winning design will be made up into a carpet by Afghan Action workers and auctioned in aid of the charity at The Scarlet Ball, organised by the school's parents' association QASPA, on Saturday 15 May 2010.  Other initiatives include Learn a Poem by Heart, which has already raised £350, a Krispie Kreme day and a charity lunch planned for March.

Alex Mackenzie Smith, the student Head of Charities, said: ‘Afghan Action is a really worthwhile project offering work to people who need it in very poor districts of the country that gives them an education and teaches them the craft of carpet weaving.

‘The crazy socks and tights day was very successful.  All the lower school girls turned up in a wild variety of socks and tights in all shapes and sizes and some of the staff got involved as well!'
