Queen Anne's students, Jessica Belcher and Hannah Bisbas, headed for the Intercontinental Hotel in Park Lane, London, on Monday to attend a conference, organised by the Financial Mail, featuring women who make unusual career choices.

‘Breaking the Mould: Women in Leadership' aims to encourage young women to consider the very widest range of career possibilities to ensure they reach their full potential.  The conference featured talks by more than 30 speakers from diverse occupations.

An apprenticeship section included representatives from British Gas, B&Q and Rolls Royce.  Secret Jobs within the Big Organisation featured successful women bankers from RBS and NatWest. Sara Murray, one of the UK's most celebrated entrepreneurs and founder of confused.com and buddi.com, presented on Entrepreneurship, and charity representatives gave an insight into the work of Save the Children, Divine Chocolate, Refuge and the Prison Reform Trust.

A section entitled The Senses featured a physiotherapist, an audiologist and optometrist from SpecSavers and representatives from Bancroft Wines and Coca Cola.

Technology and Telecomms included speakers from IBM, Moonfruit and Google and Danuta Gray, who is CEO of O2.

DCI Gill Evans and Phillipa Williamson, spoke about their respective roles with the Metropolitan Police and the Serious Fraud Office.

The conference concluded with a Money Sense Apprentice Challenge, judged by BBC Apprentice stars, Tim Cambell, Saira Khan and Margaret Mountford.

Jessica said: ‘Hannah and I agreed that the talk from DCI Evans was the most exciting, but we found all of the talks inspiring and the event has opened our eyes to what are currently male dominated careers'.

Jessica and Hannah are Managing Directors of the companies, ACE and Earth, which they set up for this year's Young Enterprise Programme. ACE sells merchandise and handles the event management for a school talent show, and Earth sells personalised track-suit bottoms and runs a confectionary and tuck shop.

Young Enterprise is a business and enterprise education charity, operating in the UK.  The charity's mission is to  ‘inspire and equip young people to learn and succeed through enterprise' giving them an opportunity to gain personal experience of how business works and understand the role it plays in providing employment and economic development.
