History The history of the School dates back to 1698, when the Grey Coat Hospital was founded for the children of Westminster by eight citizens of that borough. Their intention was that it should prove "a nursery for loyal citizens, honest workers and solid Christians". It was granted a Charter by Queen Anne in 1706 under the name of The Royal Foundation of Queen Anne.
When, in 1894, the Governors decided to use part of the endowment to found a boarding school for girls at Caversham, it was named after her. The school emblem is a deep red rose, Queen Anne's favourite flower as legend has it, and Queen Anne's girls used to wear a cardinal red hooded cloak of the same colour until the ubiquitous fleece took over!
The school values its links with Westminster and with Grey Coat Hospital, and the triennial service at Westminster Abbey provides a stirring occasion for all members of our community to worship together.
