Queen Anne's has over 270 computers on the school network. Students have access to the computer rooms between 7.30am and 9pm, as well as additional computers in the boarding houses. Boarders and sixth form students can also access the Internet in the boarding houses through their own laptop. The school has a policy of continually improving the ICT facilities and a wide range of software is available.
Lower school
All students have one lesson of ICT a week. The objective is for all students to become critical and autonomous users of ICT, in order that ICT can be a tool to assist them in all their other subjects.
In Year 7 the students are exposed to a variety of software tools to support their other subjects. For example they are taught how to use the Internet for independent learning, the need to consider the audience when designing brochures and the use of flowcharts in control.
In year 8 the emphasis moves to using spreadsheets to represent data, creating tutorials in hyper studio and the use of Computer Aided Design.
GCSE
All students currently work towards the Short Course in GCSE ICT (Edexcel). This is a very practical course with 60% of the marks being gained from completing two projects. Typically the students build a spreadsheet and website on a subject of their choice. Next year there will be the option to computer a Full GCSE in ICT by completing a further two projects.
Sixth Form
A Level ICT (OCR) is offered in the Sixth form. Again this is a highly practical course with 40% of the marks being gained from coursework. The examination focuses on having an understanding of how the applications work and the use of ICT in a business context.
A vocational ICT qualification (CLAIT Plus) is taken by all students not completing the A Level ICT.
