The geography department is staffed by two specialist and experienced teachers. All teaching is done in mixed ability groups and a wide range of teaching styles are used to encourage all girls to fulfil their potential and develop their knowledge and understanding of geography. Years 7 to 9 study topics that are in line with the National Curriculum. They develop suitable knowledge and skills in preparation for the GCSE course. GCSE and A level geography are popular options and at present we follow the AQA specification.
Fieldwork is integral to geography and we value its many benefits. In the 4s (year 8) we go to Cornwall; the trip includes a study of Coastal features, practising map skills through orienteering and going to the Eden Project. In the upper four (year 9) we go to the Cotswolds to study the impact of tourism. In the lower sixth we go to Dorset to study coastal features. Also we have a sixth form expedition; to date we have visited Iceland and Sicily. In addition to the above trips we take the girls out locally to collect data.
Other opportunities provided include entering competitions and quizzes, for example a team enter a local quiz organised by the Geographical Association. Also we take sixth form girls to local University lectures or invite guest speakers to come and speak to the girls.
